I am not surprised blogging is not considered publication for tenure purposes and agree that it may - even should - be utilized for scholarly intent. However, the immediacy of blogging lends itself to the potential problem of random issues that are better left out of a public forum being a concern. Try as you might to make a completely professional blog, the personality of each blogger emerges and the opportunity for opinion verses research could be something the tenure committee does not appreciate.
A theory is an opinion and theoretical works are accepted by AP&T committees. Blogging is a tool that can be used by scholars to test theories, and in the end can result in better theories.
What may be thought of as a random issue to one reader may be a key thought to another.
